INTD1100 Critical Thinking in the Arts and Sciences
Course Purpose
This interdisciplinary course is designed for all first year students to introduce them to college-level critical thinking processes. The most basic objectives of this course are to provide students with an introduction to the value of a liberal arts education, help them to become part of the larger academic community of learners and to learn to think critically and apply it to their own life.
Reflective Statement Interpreting IDEA Evaluations
Overall the student evaluations for Fall 2013 are quite positive (see IDEA below). This was my first time teaching this class so I was encouraged by the results. Students ranked me as an excellent teacher with a score of 4.5 on a scale of 0-5. Progress on objectives was also good with a score of 4.1. When reviewing the category "Learning on Relevant Objectives", students ranked me quite well with the majority scoring me a 4 (substantial progress) or 5 (exceptional progress). As I don't believe I will teach this course again, no changes are planned.
Learning Outcomes
Students should have a solid understanding about how to think critically to help them make more informed everyday decisions via these three interrelated phases:
-
Discovering the assumptions that guide our decisions, actions and choices
-
Checking the accuracy of these assumptions by exploring as many different perspectives, viewpoints, and sources as possible
-
Making informed decisions that are based on these researched assumptions
